How to get Google to find your website for beginners

Many people have their website created or go to one of the free, or build your own website in 5 minutes. These sites may be okay but you will be lost in the millions of websites on the internet.
The first step is to get a sitemap.xml made of your website, if your site is in WordPress there are a couple of great plug ins that do that. My favorite is Google XML Sitemaps, here is a link to the site. http://www.arnebrachhold.de/projects/wordpress-plugins/google-xml-sitemaps-generator/ I like this plug in because it has flexibility. It also creates a site map Google likes and you can manually generate a new one if you feel the need it, although it should update and ping Google and other search engines when you add something to your website or blog. If you have a website that is more static then you can use one of the online versions and it will create you a site map you will need to ftp to the root directory of your website. Here is one http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ I don’t use one of these often so I am not sure how well it works but it covers all of the basics and also has a script version you can add to your servers, and can be set up to run automatically by changing a file on the server. For the later you need FTP and or server experience. If you have never done this then you can contact us her at KillerBee Marketing and Website Design and we can quote you a small fee for doing this for you.

The next important thing you need to do is to verify ownership of your website with Google, Bing and Alexa. This way they now the site exists and who the owner is. I will discuss Google only the others are similar. If you have a Google account of any type Gmail or G+ you can log into webmaster tools. The easiest way to find it the first time is to search for Google webmaster tools, if I posted the link here because it adds some of my account information it would be huge. Log in and it will give you the option of adding a site. Add two sites, http://newwebsite.com and http://www.newwebsite.com Google looks at these as two different sites and it is important to pick one of the two and use it for everything what you fill out on the internet or have put on print. Google will split you page rank if you don’t and later you will pick an option of which one to display on Google this is also in webmaster tools. Now after adding your site click verify site and you have 4 options to do this:

• Add a meta tag to your home page (proving that you have access to the source files). To use this method, you must be able to edit the HTML code of your site’s pages.
• Upload an HTML file with the name you specify to your server. To use this method, you must be able to upload new files to your server.
• Add a DNS TXT record. To use this method, you must be able to sign in to your domain registrar or hosting provider and add a new DNS record.
• Add the Google Analytic s code you use to track your site. To use this option, you must be an administrator on the Google Analytic s account, and the tracking code must use the new asynchronous snippet.
This is a quote from Google’s webmaster Tools help section and all credit does to Google for this information. I prefer the meta tag option and if your using WordPress There is a Module that will make this easy along with other items we will discuss in another post. The meta tag looks like this:

It is placed in the home page code in the header. In WordPresss the easiest way is to get WordPress SEO by Yoast http://yoast.com/wordpress/seo/ This will do lots of functions to improve your website. If you have a static website you need to ftp your index.html to your computer there are various types of index pages depending on the language your website is written in then you add these to the header of the index page an easy place is at the top right under the description then ftp the page back onto the server your site is located at. After you do this you have to click the verify button and Google will make sure the tag is there.

For more information or a quote for help if you don’t feel comfortable doing this we will do this for a very minimal fee. Just click the link below and ask for one.
