Social Media During an Election Year

The Presidential Election is still months away but I’m sure your feeds have been flooded with political content for sometime. You may be getting frustrated and tired. You may have even seen one of your favorite brands post something political that you weren’t expecting and it made you feel discouraged. We completely understand how you feel, which is why we thought it would be a good idea to talk about how to get through an election year on Social Media as a business.

Expect your numbers to fluctuate

We don’t live and die by numbers when it comes to Social Media but analytics are definitely something that you want to keep an eye on. They oftentimes can be quite telling. If you are noticing your numbers dropping significantly in the next several months don’t take it personal. Many people are already tired of seeing all the political posts on Social Media, so as the election draws closer to protect one’s own mental health many people take a break from Social Media or don’t use it as often, which can affect your numbers. This is something that is completely out of your control, so remember that.

Should you post anything Political?

This is a decision that should not be taken lightly and should involve several of the key management and leaders of your business. When deciding whether you should do this or not, keep in mind that while you may be connecting with one group of customers, you are alienating another group, so really ask yourself if it’s worth it?

According to the Sprout Social 2023 index only 25% of consumers believe that a brand should take a stance. That’s not a huge number in the grand scheme of things so really make sure that you’re weighing the pros and cons of your decision to take a stance. Keep in mind that when the election is over many of your customers are still going to remember the posts that you were doing during this time.

Give your Customers a Reprieve

Post content that is going to give your followers a break from all of the Political noise. Whether that’s some humorous posts to give them a laugh throughout the day, or some encouraging post to inspire or give them hope. Let your Social Media become their go to place for content and community during this time of high tension and frustration. This will not only go a long way during the Political season but this can create a habit and positivity that makes them want to come back all the time.

Conclusion

Making decisions about whether you should be taking a stand when it comes to politics, or deciding what type of content you should be posting in general during an election year, can be extremely stressful. We get it. You are not alone in this. The great news is, while you may be feeling overwhelmed and not quite sure what to do, we’re here for you!
